Open for Fitness

The 2018 CrossFit Games Open is quickly approaching and it’s about this time where everyone starts thinking they need “Open training” or some different approach or added conditioning.  Calm down everybody, you’re already doing what you need to do.  You’re already doing what the Open tests….CrossFit.

Now that’s not to say that you cannot do a little added skill practice for say pull-ups or working on cleaning up barbell technique or rowing work.  Practice is fine, practice is always fine.  But the Open is just a grander version of what we already do at CrossFit Goat.  It’s a yearly test of where you stand, but for 99.8% of people that participate, that’s pretty much all it is, a yearly test.  Sorry to say it, but out of 300,000+ people, only 720 individuals will advance to regionals (plus about 3000 team athletes).  Only 40 men, 40 women and 160 team athletes (not including teens and masters athletes) will continue from there to the Games.  In a realistic look…an ultra low amount of gyms will ever have one person go one time.

So what does that mean for gyms that don’t get that chance?  It means have fun.  It means use the Open for what it is…a fun yearly test to push limits a little farther than you normally may because of the added sense of competition.

Here at CrossFit Goat, we’ll be once again doing our team and individual competition (as always, we’re improving on what worked and what did not work in the past versions).  We’ll still be throwing down with friends.  We’ll still be embracing the challenges together, we’ll still be residing in the “pain cave” together and we’ll still be celebrating the victories and rewards together.

Keep doing what you’re doing and don’t lose sight of what the 2018 CrossFit Games Open is.  Remember, we’re just a bunch of big kids playing an adult form of recess.
